Six sermon series title cards over worship backgrounds: Small Things, Seven Words, Stories Jesus Told, Joy on Purpose, Firm Ground and Wait With Us, each with its Scripture reference.

How do you choose a sermon series?

Start with a need your people have, pick a book or passage that speaks to it, and fit the length to the season. Four to eight weeks suits many churches, and the title and look can wait until the passage is settled.

  • The ideas below are grouped by season and theme, with the passages to read and three title options for each. Use them as they are or as a starting point.
  • 2027 dates (Western churches): Ash Wednesday is 10 February, Easter Sunday is 28 March, Pentecost Sunday is 16 May and Advent begins on 28 November. Christmas Day is a Saturday.
  • Plan the big seasons first, Lent and Easter, and Advent and Christmas, then fill the weeks between them.
  • Once you have a title, Design makes the post, the slide, the thumbnail and the Story in one look. Design is free with any account.

How to plan a year of series.

Four steps from a blank calendar to a title on the screen.

  1. Mark the calendar

Put Easter (28 March 2027) and Advent (from 28 November) in first, with a few weeks of lead-in before each. Then see how many weeks are left for the rest of the year.

  2. Name the need

Write down what your people are asking, struggling with or ready for. A series that answers a real need will draw people in more than a clever title will.

  3. Choose the passage and the length

Pick a book, a story or a theme and decide how many weeks it needs. A short, finished series is better than a long one that drifts.

  4. Title it, then give it a look

A title of two to four words that a visitor can say aloud. Set the look once and reuse it on the post, the slide and the thumbnail.

Passages are references to read in your own translation. Week counts are suggestions, so shorten or stretch them to fit your calendar.
